The Tor from the Glastonbury Festival

The Glastonbury Festival is not actually held in the town of Glastonbury. Instead, it takes place at Worthy Farm in the nearby village of Pilton, about six miles away. The name comes down to recognition and identity rather than precise geography. When the event began in 1970, “Pilton” was little known, whereas “Glastonbury” already carried strong cultural associations, linked to myth, spirituality, and landmarks such as the Glastonbury Tor, which aligned with the festival’s atmosphere. Early on, organiser Michael Eavis adopted the name “Glastonbury Fayre,” and from that point the association stuck.
